TRADES PEOPLE DECODED · BY CHILLIN LOUNGE
A good tradesperson deserves a good reputation.
And neighbours deserve somewhere to find local trades, ask sensible questions and understand what other customers experienced — without wading through anonymous claims.
New section — currently in testing: Private trade advert submissions, scanned photo uploads and customer review submissions now have staff moderation queues. Public listings, photo galleries, reviews and star ratings are still in testing. No public adverts or customer ratings are approved for use yet. When launched, adverts and ratings must not be treated as independently trusted simply because they appear here. We will not publish made-up listings or reviews.
Photographs: Private trade advert photographs can be uploaded by eligible members and are checked with the existing malware scanner, re-encoding and staff approval tools. No photo is displayed publicly. Customer review photos remain a separate future feature.
Private advert drafts are now available to verified community members. You can create an ordinary community account, confirm your email, and save up to three private trade adverts. Advert, photo and customer review submissions go to separate moderation queues. Public adverts, photo display, review publication and ratings remain disabled; participant-only private messaging is available for independently approved adverts.
THE PLANUseful to customers. Fair to trades.
A listing should tell you what someone actually offers, what they have supplied evidence for and how other customers rate their work. No paid placement should be mistaken for independent verification.
01Local trade profiles
Tradespeople will be able to submit their own adverts, describe their service area and declare qualifications. Every advert needs administrator approval before appearing publicly. A claim is not a verified credential unless checked.
02Registered-member reviews
Only eligible signed-in members will be able to leave star ratings and written reviews. Each review requires moderation before publication. Ratings will use only visible, approved reviews from eligible members.
03Conversations kept on-site
Eligible registered customers and trades can exchange participant-only private messages about approved adverts. Emails contain only the opening line and a link back to a signed-in conversation, not the full exchange. Members can block threads and report received messages.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Trust means showing how things are checked.
Reviewed before publication
New adverts, edited adverts and customer reviews will wait in an administration queue. Businesses won't be able to approve reviews about themselves.
Account bans take effect everywhere
When a member is banned, their adverts, reviews and rating contributions will disappear from public results. The average will be recalculated from eligible approved reviews, not stored as an inflated lifetime score.
Real right of reply
Trades will be able to respond privately to customers. Abuse, threats, sensitive personal details and unsolicited marketing need reporting, rate limits and proportionate moderation.
Advertisements are not endorsements
We will clearly separate paid advertising, business-submitted claims, checked qualifications and customer opinions. No unverified trade will be labelled “approved” as if we guarantee their work.
HOW WE'LL SHOW THE EVIDENCE
What does “verified” actually mean?
A good advert is useful, but it isn't proof of a good job. When listings launch, we'll separate what a business tells us, what we've checked, what customers say, and what is paid promotion. Here is how to read those labels.
Business-suppliedWhat the business says
Services, experience, service area and qualifications supplied by the advertiser. These remain claims unless a specific piece of evidence has been checked.
Evidence checkedWhat we have checked
We'll explain exactly which document, register or source was checked and when. A checked certificate does not guarantee the quality of future work.
Customer opinionWhat a customer experienced
Moderated reviews will describe individual experiences. A review is not a professional inspection, and a star average is not independent accreditation.
AdvertisementWhat is paid placement
Any paid promotion will be labelled clearly. Paying for visibility will never turn an unverified claim into a verified qualification or an endorsement.
Not checked doesn't mean dishonest. It means we haven't independently confirmed that particular claim. We'll never imply we've carried out checks that haven't happened.
PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR NEIGHBOURSBefore you agree to a job
Even when our directory opens, these simple checks are worth making yourself.
- Get the details in writing. Ask what's included in the price, materials, VAT, timescales and how changes will be agreed.
- Check the right credentials. For regulated work, verify registration with the relevant official scheme, rather than relying on a logo in an advert.
- Know who you're dealing with. Confirm the business's contact details, insurance where appropriate, and who will actually carry out the work.
- Keep a record. Save quotes, invoices and messages. Be cautious about pressure to pay large sums up front without clear terms.
This is general consumer guidance, not a recommendation of any individual trader. No businesses or customer reviews are published here yet.
What happens next?
Site-wide community registration, private advert drafts, scanned photograph submissions and privately moderated customer reviews are available. Private member reports, conversations and their moderation safeguards are being tested ahead of the public launch. The new directory layout is available as a launch preview, but trade adverts, profile pages and rating display remain switched off publicly; private messaging is restricted to eligible logged-in participants until all required protections pass testing.
Until then, you can explore our existing Planning Decoded, Schools Decoded, and HMO Decoded sections.
